Il Presidente del Consiglio, Mario Draghi, martedì 10 e mercoledì 11 maggio è in visita a Washington. Nella prima giornata ha incontrato il Presidente degli Stati Uniti d’America, Joseph R. Biden jr, alla Casa Bianca.
Di seguito la dichiarazione del Presidente del Consiglio, Mario Draghi, in occasione del suo incontro con il Presidente degli Stati Uniti d’America, Joseph R. Biden jr, alla Casa Bianca.
-Lasciatemi dire che è un grande piacere essere qui con voi oggi.
Grazie per questo invito, grazie per questa magnifica ospitalità.
I legami tra i nostri due Paesi sono sempre stati molto forti e, semmai, questa guerra in Ucraina li ha resi ancora più forti.
Se Putin ha mai pensato di poterci dividere, ha fallito. Su questo non c’è dubbio.
Siamo uniti nel condannare l’invasione dell’Ucraina, nel sanzionare la Russia e nell’aiutare l’Ucraina come ci chiede il Presidente Zelensky.
Devo dirvi che in Italia e in Europa ora la gente vuole mettere fine a questi massacri, a questa violenza, a questa macelleria che sta accadendo.
La gente pensa a cosa possiamo fare per portare la pace.
Dobbiamo certamente usare qualsiasi canale diretto/indiretto, la comunicazione – ma è sufficiente? Cosa possiamo fare?
La gente pensa, o almeno vuole pensare, alla possibilità di portare un cessate il fuoco e di ricominciare con dei negoziati credibili. Questa è la situazione in questo momento.
Penso che dobbiamo riflettere profondamente su come affrontare questo.
Continueremo, io e te, a lavorare sulla sicurezza energetica, sulla sicurezza alimentare in particolare – che ora è un’altra questione e ne parleremo più tardi, su cosa fare.
L’altra cosa che dirò – non credo che ne parleremo più tardi – è che quello che è successo in Ucraina porterà un drastico cambiamento nell’Unione Europea. Siamo sempre stati vicini; ora saremo molto più vicini.
So di poter contare sul tuo sostegno come un vero amico dell’Europa, e dell’Italia naturalmente.

Let me say it’s a great pleasure to be with you here today.
Thanks for this invitation, thanks for this magnificent hospitality.
The ties between our two countries have always been very strong and, if anything, this war in Ukraine made them stronger.
If Putin ever thought that he could divide us, he failed. There’s no question about that.
We stand together in condemning the invasion of Ukraine, in sanctioning Russia and in helping Ukraine as President Zelensky is asking us to do.
I have to tell you that in Italy and in Europe now, people want to put an end to these massacres, to this violence, to this butchery that is happening.
People think about what we can do to bring peace.
We certainly have to use any direct/indirect channel, communication – but is that enough? What can we do?
People think, at least they want to think, about the possibility of bringing a ceasefire and starting again with some credible negotiations. That’s the situation right now.
I think that we have to think deeply on how to address this.
We will continue, you and I, to work on energy security, food security especially – which is now another issue and we’ll talk later about that, about what to do.
The other thing I will say – I don’t think we’ll discuss this later – but what happened in Ukraine is going to bring a drastic change in the European Union. We’ve always been close; now we’re going to be much closer.
I know I can count on your support as a true friend of Europe, and of Italy of course.
